For Commercial & Industrial Hire

Temporary chiller hire hospital deployments have no margin for error. When a private Brisbane hospital’s permanent heat pump chiller system failed during peak demand, operating theatres and sensitive medical equipment were at risk. Aircon Rentals had a 200kW air-cooled heat pump chiller installed and running at ground level within 48 hours.

200kW — Air-cooled heat pump chiller deployed 80m — Victaulic pipework and flexible hose connections 48hrs — From callout to commissioned system 12 weeks — Total temporary deployment

The situation

A private Brisbane hospital lost its permanent heat pump chiller system without warning, right in the middle of peak demand. In a hospital, that kind of failure moves fast. Operating theatres run to tight temperature and humidity specs, and a few degrees in the wrong direction puts equipment at risk and triggers compliance problems that no facilities manager wants to be sorting out at 2am. Patient care doesn’t stop while a fix gets sourced.

The site ruled out a standard deployment on four counts. No rooftop space for temporary equipment. The existing infrastructure already running under heavy load. Healthcare compliance requirements with no flexibility. And residential properties about 30 metres away, which put a hard ceiling on acceptable noise output.

The solution

Aircon Rentals worked directly with the HVAC contractor to design a ground-level installation in the hospital car park. The system centred on a 200kW air-cooled heat pump chiller, selected specifically for its low-noise operation given the proximity to residential areas. A water circulation pump maintained stable flow and pressure throughout, with 80 metres of Victaulic pipework and flexible hoses connecting the temporary system to the hospital’s existing infrastructure.

Victaulic connections were used throughout to avoid any hot works on an active healthcare site. No welding, no permits, no disruption to the wards above.

For locations with existing condenser water infrastructure, water-cooled chiller hire can also be used to enhance efficiency and capacity.

Remote monitoring was set up from day one, giving the Aircon Rentals team real-time visibility of system performance and the ability to respond to any fluctuations without needing to be on-site. This is part of how we approach all emergency response solutions — the job doesn’t end at commissioning.

The deployment

The trucks were loaded and on their way. Equipment landed in the hospital car park, got connected to the existing system, and was fully commissioned inside 48 hours. For the next 12 weeks it ran as part of the hospital’s own HVAC setup — keeping the operating theatres stable and the dehumidification running continuously.

For facilities needing complete air distribution support, air handling unit hire can be integrated with temporary chillers to create a comprehensive HVAC solution.

The outcome

The hospital kept running. Operating theatres stayed within required environmental parameters, sensitive medical equipment was protected, and patient care continued without interruption. No downtime, no compliance issues, no noise complaints from neighbouring properties.

When the permanent chiller replacement came online, Aircon Rentals worked with the hospital’s engineering team to transition the load in controlled stages, handing back a fully restored system with no disruption to operations. What facilities managers in healthcare can take from this

HVAC failure in a hospital isn’t something that can wait for a convenient time. Having a contingency plan before something goes wrong, knowing the access constraints of your site, and understanding what a ground-level installation requires — all of that cuts the response time when it actually matters.

Noise compliance near residential areas needs to be part of the equipment selection conversation from the start, not something addressed after the truck arrives. Low-noise chiller hire options exist specifically for sensitive environments — healthcare, residential-adjacent sites, and education facilities.

Remote monitoring throughout the hire period means problems get caught early, before they affect the wards. For facilities that require ongoing climate control support, our design and engineering solutions team can assess your site and plan a system that works within your constraints from day one.
