Bottling plant chiller hire gave a Queensland beverage production facility the additional cooling capacity it needed during a critical summer production period.

One of the plant’s key production machines was operating below capacity because the existing air-cooled chillers could no longer meet the increased cooling demand. With production already running at maximum output, the site needed a temporary chiller hire solution that could be installed quickly and connected to the existing system with minimal interruption.

Aircon Rentals designed and supplied a complete temporary cooling system using a 160kW air-cooled chiller, plate heat exchanger, pump and supporting equipment.

The system was deployed with an eight-hour turnaround and remained on hire for 16 weeks.

The Challenge

The bottling plant was approaching one of its busiest production periods when cooling capacity became a constraint.

One of its key production machines could no longer operate at the required output because the existing chillers were unable to meet the additional demand. The plant was already running at maximum capacity ahead of summer, leaving little flexibility to reduce production while a permanent solution was considered.

Any further loss of output could affect the production schedule and the plant’s ability to meet its commitments to key customers.

The temporary equipment also needed to fit inside a secure plant enclosure close to the existing manifold connections and electrical supply.

This meant the system had to deliver enough additional cooling while working within the available space and existing site infrastructure.

The Temporary Bottling Plant Cooling Solution

Aircon Rentals assessed the cooling requirement and designed a temporary process-cooling system around a 160kW air-cooled chiller.

The chiller was supplied with a plate heat exchanger, water pump and the supporting equipment needed to connect it to the plant’s existing cooling circuit.

Rather than delivering a standalone chiller and leaving the customer to manage the integration, Aircon Rentals configured the equipment as a complete temporary system.

The design accounted for:

  • The additional cooling capacity required by the production machine
  • Existing manifold connection points
  • Available electrical supply
  • Equipment placement inside the secure enclosure
  • Water flow through the temporary circuit
  • Integration with the plant’s existing cooling equipment
  • Additional support if one of the permanent chillers failed

The hire system gave the production machine the cooling capacity it needed while also providing an extra level of backup during a critical production period.

Creating a Secondary Cooling Loop

A plate heat exchanger was installed to create a secondary loop between the temporary chiller and the plant’s existing system.

This allowed the hire equipment to operate through a separate temporary circuit while transferring heat from the production process.

A temporary water pump maintained flow through the secondary loop, allowing the chiller, heat exchanger and production equipment to operate together.

Including the heat exchanger and pump was important because the project involved more than matching the required cooling capacity on paper. Water temperatures, pressure, flow rates and connection points all needed to suit the existing plant.

The secondary loop also kept the temporary hire circuit separated from the plant’s permanent cooling system while still allowing heat to move efficiently between the two.

Installation During Peak Production

The temporary system was deployed with an eight-hour turnaround.

Aircon Rentals worked with the customer to schedule the installation during an active production period while keeping commissioning time and disruption to a minimum.

The equipment was positioned close to the existing manifold and electrical supply without requiring a crane. This reduced installation complexity and avoided additional lifting, mobilisation and site-access costs.

Once the chiller, heat exchanger and pump were connected, the temporary system was commissioned and brought online to support the production machine.

The installation allowed the plant to gain the additional cooling capacity it needed without waiting for a major permanent equipment upgrade.

Supporting Production for 16 Weeks

The temporary cooling system remained in operation for 16 weeks.

This gave the bottling plant additional process-cooling capacity throughout a key production period rather than providing a short-term fix for only a few days.

The system also gave the site another layer of cooling support. If one of the permanent chillers experienced a problem during the hire period, the temporary system could provide additional available capacity.

That extra support was particularly valuable while the plant was running at maximum output and had limited tolerance for a cooling interruption.

The Outcome

The 160kW temporary chiller system supplied the additional cooling capacity required by the production machine.

With the hire system operating, the bottling plant continued production throughout a critical period ahead of summer and maintained the output needed to meet its customer commitments.

The installation was completed without a crane, reducing mobilisation time and avoiding additional project costs.

The temporary system then remained in operation for the full 16-week hire period, supporting production and providing additional cooling capacity if one of the plant’s permanent chillers became unavailable.
