A chicken producer in rural Victoria required poultry chiller hire while its permanent cooling system was taken offline for scheduled maintenance.
The facility relied on continuous cooling to maintain temperature-controlled areas and protect frozen stock. Before the main chiller could be safely isolated, a temporary cooling system needed to be installed, connected and operating.
Aircon Rentals supplied a 500kW air-cooled chiller, chilled-water pump and temporary hoses to maintain cooling throughout the planned maintenance period.
The Challenge
Routine chiller maintenance helps reduce the risk of unexpected equipment failure and disruption to temperature-critical operations. However, completing the work required the facility’s permanent chiller to be completely isolated.
Cooling still needed to remain available while maintenance was carried out. Without replacement capacity, temperatures could rise and frozen stock could be put at risk.
The temporary system also needed to work with the facility’s existing chilled-water and air-handling infrastructure.
Site access presented another challenge. The available installation position required the temporary chiller to be lifted over the building and placed close enough to the existing system for temporary connections to be established.
The Solution
Aircon Rentals carried out a site inspection before the shutdown to assess:
- Required temporary cooling capacity
- Existing chilled-water infrastructure
- Connection points
- Pump and hose requirements
- Equipment positioning
- Existing air-handling equipment
- Site and crane access
A 500kW air-cooled chiller was selected to provide the required temporary cooling capacity.
The temporary system included:
- 500kW air-cooled chiller
- Chilled-water pump
- Temporary chilled-water hoses
- Connections to the existing cooling system
Aircon Rentals’ industrial chillers are designed to allow practical site positioning, including lifting by crane where required. For this project, the 500kW chiller was craned over the building and positioned close to the facility’s existing cooling infrastructure.

The 500kW temporary chiller was craned over the building to reach the required installation position.
The team then connected the chilled-water pump, temporary hoses and chiller to the existing system.
The temporary system was commissioned and operating before the permanent chiller was isolated, allowing the planned maintenance work to proceed.

The temporary chiller, pump and hoses were connected and commissioned before the permanent chiller was taken offline.
Maintaining Cooling During Planned Maintenance
Once commissioned, the temporary chiller supplied the facility’s existing cooling system while the permanent chiller was taken offline.
This allowed the existing air-handling infrastructure to continue supporting the temperature-controlled areas during the maintenance period.
The temporary chiller hire system remained in operation until work on the permanent equipment was complete.
Cooling was then transferred back to the site’s permanent system before the temporary chiller, pump and hoses were isolated and removed.
The Result
The temporary cooling system allowed the poultry facility to complete scheduled chiller maintenance while maintaining cooling to temperature-critical areas.
The solution provided:
- 500kW of temporary cooling capacity
- Continuous cooling during planned maintenance
- Protection for temperature-sensitive and frozen stock
- Integration with the existing chilled-water system
- Continued use of existing air-handling infrastructure
- Temporary chilled-water pump and hose connections
- Installation before the permanent chiller was isolated
- Crane positioning to suit restricted site access
Using temporary cooling capacity also meant the facility could support the planned shutdown without installing permanent standby equipment solely for occasional maintenance requirements.
Following the hire, the temporary equipment was returned to Aircon Rentals’ Kensington branch, where it could be cleaned, inspected and tested before its next deployment.
Planning Chiller Maintenance at a Poultry Facility?
Temporary chiller hire can provide replacement cooling while permanent refrigeration or chilled-water equipment is being serviced, repaired, upgraded or replaced.
Aircon Rentals provides temporary cooling solutions for meat and poultry processing facilities across Australia, including chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, hoses and supporting equipment.
Planning before a shutdown allows our team to assess the required cooling capacity, operating temperatures, flow requirements, available power, connection points, equipment positioning and site access before permanent equipment is taken offline.
For unexpected equipment failures, temporary systems can also provide replacement or additional cooling while permanent repairs are completed.
